Macron Warns Europe Risks Losing Digital Sovereignty

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Tuesday that Europe faces the danger of losing control over its digital future unless it reduces its dependence on American and Chinese technology firms and cultivates its own industrial leaders.

Speaking at the Summit on European Digital Sovereignty in Berlin, Macron emphasized that Europe “does not want to be the client of the big entrepreneurs or the big solutions being provided, either from the US or from China.”

He highlighted that complete reliance on overseas platforms could weaken both competitiveness and the resilience of democratic systems.

Macron warned, “If we let the Americans and the Chinese have all the champions, one thing is certain: we may have the best regulations in the world, but we won’t be regulating anything.”

He further added, “Our goal is to design our own solutions, preserve our sovereignty, and refuse to become a vassal."

He pointed out that the European Union has entered a new era of global technological rivalry covering areas such as AI, cloud computing, semiconductors, and quantum technologies.

Urging a “Franco-German reflex” in digital strategy, Macron said that the current geopolitical environment requires unified European measures, including streamlined regulations, stronger capital markets, and preferential support for European companies in public contracts.

Additionally, he advocated for enhanced protection of European data and cautioned about the risks of “extraterritorial enforcement of foreign laws” if sensitive information continues to be stored on platforms outside Europe.
